i have been in shimane prefecture staying with my grandparents for the past few days. for those of you who are not familiar with japanese geography, don't feel bad. most japanese don't even know where shimane is. (in case you are interested, it is about an hour plane ride west of tokyo, on the sea of japan.)
**the spider above is considered small. he was my roommate for two days. as a sidenote: in japan, you do not kill spiders as they are considered your ancestors there to watch over and protect you.

it has been wonderful to relax and spend some quality time with the family. being here reminds me of my childhood and it was a great way to spend my last full week here. i spent a lot of time looking at old family photos, talking to family and soaking it all in.
